Category3BT

Based on the Three Beautiful Things project by Clare Law, I try to write about three pleasant things from my day.

3BT – phew, paint it black/muted, oh

1. I fear – a dread fear that makes my blood run cold – that we’ve run out of brown sauce then I spot a new bottle at the back of the cupboard.

2. The brush is the same width as the frame. The paint goes on smoothly – much better than expected – though I only realise after two coats that it’s a metallic black. A top coat of matte black dampens and deepens everything to a thorough evenness.

2b. I got the bright colours to make it the picture pop but, actually, it’s the muted grey-purple that works best.

3. Oh the lamb chops. Oh the samosa chaat.

3BT – muffin, waddling dog, in the dark with company

1. The slight sourness of the muffin.

2. The dog waddles over to us to say hello. Early on, I offer him a treat and I spend the rest of the afternoon with an expectant friend.

3. Stretched out in the dark to watching old Game of Thrones episodes. Once we pull over the footstool, Strange and Kaufman take their places alongside us.

3BT – Thai cafe/cheap, fat strings, stoned into playfulness/long

1. He wants to make sure we get what we’ll like rather than what we think we want. Though it is made fresh for us, the food arrives in less time than it took us to decide on it.

1b. We both gasp at the price of parking – we can’t believe it’s so cheap.

2. While John makes his way through the wall of ukeleles, I giggle at the size of the nylon strings on the bass ukes. They look like foam, or thick spaghetti.

3. I don’t think I’ll get to meet the new cat at all but the second time I go in – after leaving a catnip soaked toy in the room the first time – he runs over to me at a full sprint, gnaws my hand and purrs loudly.

3b. The game goes on longer than it should but it’s good fun all the way.

3BT – spring, as you do, more custard

1. In some ways it still feels like it’s early in the year (mostly because I’m behind on seed sowing compared to normal) but spring really is here. We open windows: air and light stream into the house.

2. Our friend R comes to visit – we haven’t seen him for a while so it’s good to catch up and confuse ourselves again: small talk almost instantly slides into the details of the multiverse theory.

3. I mention there is more custard and John’s face lights up.

3BT – while toasting, Anomalisa/Bradford, ringlets

1. While waiting for the toast to pop, John plays the ukelele and I dance to his tune.

2. I finally get to see Anomalisa at the cinema. I found the last third, from the dream sequence onwards, a little patchy but the first two thirds were perfect Kaufman – beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. The animation was breathtaking too.

2b. We amble into Bradford after the film – for the walk as much as anything else, though I pick up a pad of paper for my inky doodling. On the way back out, we look down the snicket to where the Sunbridge Tunnels will open out – it’s exciting to see more new development in the city.

3. The damp air makes my hair curl into ringlets.

3BT – their fault/garden cat, post, ramen soup

1. Two silky kitties stop me getting out of bed.

1b. Later, I pop out into the garden to look for R-kitten but find his sweet sister instead. She sits on my knee and we enjoy a long cuddle.

2. The postman brings nice things: two sets of prints and a book that I’ve been waiting for.

3. I forget to put the noodles in the ramen soup (kinda a key ingredient) and we laugh. A few minutes later, with hastily cooked noodles added, we slurp our massive bowls of soup for a good twenty minutes, stopping every few minutes to freshen the flavours. Such a delicious, tactile and visually appealing dinner.
