Recycle This!

How can I recycle this logoJohn and I have a new little project. It’s called “How can I recycle this?” – http://www.recyclethis.co.uk.

It’s a community-driven site, coming up with creative and fun ways to reuse and recycle various bits and bobs from around the home and garden. Each week, there will also be a green dilemma to discuss because we constantly find ourselves in a tangle about which out of two green or ethical options are best.

As it says on the site’s about page, we decided to set it up after eating a big pile of pistachio nuts. There we were, enjoying the sodium high but at a loss about what to do with the leftover shells. We thought there must be a million uses for them but we just couldn’t think what.

The design isn’t finally finalised yet but we thought we should get going on it since the content is the important bit.

Anyway, go over and leave some suggestions!

Stuff on My Cat

Sili in a bagI don’t usually just pimp random websites but this made me laugh a lot this morning: http://www.stuffonmycat.com/

Some on the front page are a bit hit and miss but the “Best of 2005” are pretty awesome: Loki is the best though. In fact, nearly all the food pictures rate highly on the amusement-o-meter. Eric wins the cute prize though.

And if all that wasn’t strange enough, the actual Stuff on My Cat ‘my cat’ is an absolutely clone of my mum and dad’s cat Holly in terms of markings. Awww.

(The picture here is Sili, by the way – probably the only of our cats that would let us get away with such tomfoolery)

Dashing

i am writing this entry using a program called dasher it is a program that lets you write by only moving the mouse a little bit or using an eyetracker if you cant use a mouse so is useful for people that have problems using a keyboard

i dont know how to do punctuation yet but aside from that it is pretty easy to learn as long as you know your alphabet

my main problem is remembering to put spaces in if it doesnt do it for me oh and the punctuation is a big problem i like talking in parenthesis and these double spaces dont really do the job but i imagine james joyce could have a lot of fun with it

its a great idea though and lots of fun you should try it out

Workrave

Workrave sheep logoSince moving offices at work, I’ve noticed I’ve been having more pains in my wrists than normal. By coincidence, I’ve also met several people over the last few months that have been debilitated through RSI. I realise that the latter might have made me more conscious of the former but anyway, it’s made me start thinking about how much my life would change if I couldn’t spend all day in front of a computer and forced me to take action to stop (or at least lessen the changes) of that happening. And that’s probably a very good thing.

I’ve started paying more attention to posture and making sure I hold my hands correctly over my keyboard. I’ve also installed a little open-source program that I read about on the RSI page of Wikipedia called Workrave. It is reminds you to take breaks regularly and give yourself a daily limit as to how much time you should spend on your computer. It also, rather nicely, gives you muscles stretching and strengthening exercises to do during your longer breaks to relieve eye strain as well as your wrist/arm/shoulder muscles. And it’s got a cute sheep for a logo.

Foundation by Issac Asimov

Foundation by Issac Asimov - coverFor almost a year now, I’ve been playing an online game based on the Foundation series by Issac Asimov. It is, strangely enough, called FoundationGame (or FondationJeu in its original French) and can be found here (and here for the French version).

I started playing because John introduced me to it. He had read the series and was enjoying the game, so got me to sign up too. I was reticent at first: the rules/instructions seemed really vague, with no guidance for newbies. I also felt I would suffer because I hadn’t read the books. But my obsessive gaming streak won through in the end so here I am, a year later, and it’s the first site I visit each time I get on the web. I have a higher threshold for annoying bits of games and bad interfaces than John – he gave it up after a couple of weeks.

This game has become a big part of my online life now so last week I decided to take the plunge and start reading the books. I’ve only read the first one so far – I’m just having a minor Iain Banks break (re-reading Espedair Street and Whit) then will crack on with the others.

Damn spammers

I got an email from “eBay” this morning claiming I needed to “update my billing information”. Of course, this was really just phishing for my eBay account details so they could happily defraud me and sully my good eBay name by defrauding others and bidding on Spice Girl merchandise. So, naturally, I clicked on the link to “eBay” supplied in the email.
